Accuracy & Method
Draping is a comparison, not a measurement. An analyst puts one color under your chin, then another, and watches what changes in the skin between the two — shadows, redness, evenness, the definition of your jawline. Nothing is being read off a scale. This matters because it tells you exactly what a self-test can and cannot reproduce: it can reproduce the comparison, as long as the light is stable and you look at your face rather than the fabric. What it cannot reproduce is a trained pair of eyes and a full set of physical drapes.
Not every dimension is equally reliable at home.
A practical rule: trust a result you have reproduced twice on different days, and treat the sub-season as a starting point rather than a verdict. If your result keeps landing between two neighbouring types, read stuck between two seasons.
An online test is good at narrowing you to a temperature and a depth, giving you a working palette immediately, and costing nothing to repeat. For most people that is where nearly all of the practical benefit lives.
An in-person session is worth paying for when your self-tests keep contradicting each other, when you have a neutral or olive complexion that resists the standard tests, or when you are about to make an expensive decision — a wedding dress, a full wardrobe rebuild, a professional rebrand. A good analyst brings controlled lighting, dozens of physical drapes and comparative experience, which is exactly what a phone cannot supply.
Anyone claiming certainty about sixteen types from a single uploaded selfie is describing a precision the input does not contain.
Almost always the lighting changed. A test at a window at noon and a test under a ceiling lamp at night are two different experiments. Repeat both under the same conditions before deciding either was wrong.
It can estimate. What it is reading is the pixel values your camera decided to record, which have already been through white balance, exposure and often smoothing. That is enough to suggest a temperature, and not enough to settle a sub-season with confidence.
Price is not the variable — conditions and comparison are. A free test done at a window with no makeup beats an expensive one done under mixed lighting. What money buys in person is controlled light, real fabric and an experienced eye.
